Sonoma County is on the map for Climate Protection. Through the efforts of
the Sonoma County Climate Protection Campaign, the county and its nine
cities are all now part of the International Council for Local Environmental
Initiatives (ICLEI) Climate Protection Campaign. This is the first time any
area in the U.S. has had 100% of its local governments committing to protect
the climate.

On August 20, 2002 the Sonoma County Board of Supervisors voted to approve a resolution for the County to join the Climate Protection Campaign sponsored by ICLEI. This was the final vote after all nine of the county's
cities had already signed on independently.

Passing resolutions is a prelude for the actual work of climate protection,
outlined by ICLEI's five milestones:

  1. Inventory GHG emissions.
  2. Set targets for reducing them.
  3. Create a plan for how to meet the targets.
  4. Implement the plan.
  5. Monitor and adjust as appropriate.

PhotoThe Sonoma County Climate Protection Campaign began in the summer of 2001 as a program of education for elected officials, government staff and the community about climate change and the international campaign for climate protection that works to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases. In June, 2002, this educational project spun off from SSC as it transitioned into a project encouraging local governments to follow the program outlined by ICLEI. As we can see, the project has been very successful and SSC is glad to see this project blossom and take on a life of its own.
